The Canal de Castilla is one of the most ambitious waterway engineering projects ever to have been undertaken in Spain. The waterway, in itself, is a national treasure of Spain’s heritage. Along the entire 207-kilometer length of the canal, however, a series of wetlands have formed that are an equally valuable oasis of biodiversity in the steppes of Tierra de Campos. Unfortunately, many of these marsh ecosystems have been destroyed or seriously damaged by drainage projects, farming or livestock raising activities.

The LIFE Nature project “Wetland Restoration and Management: Canal of Castile SPA” will be implemented between October 2006 and September 2010. The primary objective of this project is to develop a plan for managing, monitoring and restoring the wetlands of the canal.

The budget allocated to this project is 1,593,448 euros, (40% financed by the European Commission and the rest by the study sponsor, Fundación Global Nature, and its partners: Confederación Hidrográfica del Duero, Fundación Patrimonio Natural de Castilla y León and Diputación de Palencia.
